Japanese Buddhist painting reflects the beginning of Tang dynasty painting in China. The Japanese adopted almost everything else of Chinese culture, including styles of architecture, city planning, painting, sculpture, calligraphy, costume, as well as the lifestyles of the 7th and 8th Century.

What’s interesting is that while many aspects of Chinese style began to change in later centuries, in Japan, the Tang dynasty models are still observed, so that today a Japanese bride may look exactly like exactly like an 8th century bride in Tang dynasty China.
