Inspired by Kalu Rinpoche, Lama Dorje’s had a vision of building an impressive stupa at KSK (Kagyu Shenpen Kunchab), in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The stupa began construction in 1982 with the help of Jerry Morrell, Paul Kloppenburg, and hundreds of volunteers. In 1985 Lama Dorje asked Sanje Elliott to be the director of the painting for the interior wall murals. Along with Cynthia Moku, Judy Asbury, and the help of many others, the stupa was consecrated in 1986, and completed in 1987.

Most of the major Kagyu lineage deities, including buddhas, bodhisattvas, and enlightened beings are represented in the wall paintings which took three summers to complete. The Buddha in the bumpa near the top of the stupa was a sculpture by Joshua Mulder.
