Gandharan sculptures are the result of Greco-Roman art being introduced into the tradition of Buddhism. When Alexander the Great came to India in 327 BCE his troops refused to go any further due to fatigue and that the Indian armies had elephants. So they retreated into northern India near the Silk routes, specifically what is now Afghanistan and Pakistan. This area was known as Gandhara, and was a major Buddhist kingdom. Alexander’s artists illustrated Buddhist themes with their Greco-Roman style. This tradition lasted for over one thousand years.
