Images of the Buddha were first brought to Korea by monks from China in the 4th Century. The sculpture of Korea results in prototypes developed in India, Silk Road countries, and China. Although very similar to both Chinese and Japanese sculptural forms, the Korean images actually portray some of the distinctive styles of the Korean physical features. Korea was influential in transmitting Buddhist sculptural forms to Japan in the 6th century.
