Theravada is the oldest of Buddhism's three major sects, as it was one of 18 schools that existed in the centuries following the Buddha's death. Having preserved the teachings of Gautama Buddha in the Pali Canon, Theravada focuses on monastic discipline, mindfulness, and enlightenment through meditation. In the modern era, the Vipassana movement (also called Insight Meditation or the American Vipassana movement) refers to a branch of Burmese Theravada Buddhism, and has been spread by teachers like Jospeh Goldstein and Tara Brach.
Theravada Buddhism originally spread from India to Sri Lanka and then to Southeast Asia, and is now the main religion in Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka, and is practiced around the world.
