After the Theravdan School, a new movement in Buddhism gradually occurred in the 1st Century, called Mahayana, or the second turning of the wheel. In Mahayana Buddhism, the idea of the Bodhisattva developed, and most Mahayana practitioners took the Bodhisattva vow to help all beings cross over to Nirvana before themselves.

The two schools of Mahayana are Pure Land and Zen Buddhism. Zen practice is based on a pure, formal discipline of meditation, while Pure Land Buddhism is based primarily on faith and saying prayers to be reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land, Sukhavati.
