Prior to the Communist invasion of Tibet in 1959 large thangkas were traditionally hung on the outside of monastery walls for ceremonial celebrations. In recent years the production of these large thangkas has slowly begun to be revived due to the help of Western artists, such as Swiss thangka painter Peter Iselli and his assistants.
