The creation of a Tibetan Buddhist sand mandala is a symbol of life, death, and rebirth. First the sand mandala is painstakingly created by monks precisely placing colored sands according to the subject of the mandala using special tools. The finished mandala, after being ceremoniously consecrated, will then be ritually destroyed— the sand is collected, wrapped in silk, and taken to a river to be reunited with the earth as a symbol of impermanence.
